Applus+ Laboratories expands UK testing facility with a new EMC chamber for Battery and HV components

Our UK lab, Applus+ 3C Test, keeps growing its testing capabilities to support the electrification of the automotive industry with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for new energy vehicles and their key components.

Located at Silverstone, in the heart of the UK racing industry, Applus+ 3C Test is building one of the most advanced independent laboratories for vehicle electronic testing.

Besides the recent incorporation of a second EMC chamber for large vehicles and the creation of an environmental battery lab, Applus+ 3C Test is also expanding its testing potential with a new medium size semi-anechoic chamber.

The addition of this recent EMC facility prepared for HV components means that the laboratory can increase its testing slots to meet the growing market demand.  The chamber is fully equipped with the auxiliary equipment to test samples up to 1500V DC 200 A / 1000 V DC 400 A / 400 V AC 3 phase 250 A.

Measuring 10m long, 3 m wide and 4 m height with a reinforced floor for up to 3 tonnes loads, this chamber also offers a convenient solution to test the electromagnetic compatibility of Battery Management Systems (BMS) when integrated with its battery pack.  

Due to its dimensions and its door size, the chamber is also prepared to test onboard emissions for passengers’ cars, adding another vehicle test chamber to the existing ones.

Applus+ Laboratories opens a new laboratory for testing EV batteries

This latest upgrade to the UK automotive testing facilities is an important one. The lithium batteries found in new energy vehicles (EV, HV/PHEV and FCEV) must be tested to ensure their performance. More critically though, they must be tested to safeguard against failures during shipping, accidents and general operations.

Some of these tests can be performed at module level, but others, like vibration and shock, must also be done at complete battery pack level. This requires huge, specialist test benches with ad-hoc security measures, which can be found in this new lab.

A UK first

Indeed, the most notable of all of the new lab’s equipment is an extensive shaker that couples with a large climatic chamber. There are no other systems in the UK that can test battery packs as large as this one can, and there are only a few in the whole of Europe.

The climatic chamber can support battery packs up to 2 x 1.6 m in size, at temperatures between -70 ºC and +180 ºC. The shaker has the capacity for 200 kN vibration (random and sine) and 400 kN shock and the system is compliant with the most stringent safety requirements to safeguard against battery failures.

The lab is also equipped with additional shakers and climatic chambers, including equipment for testing corrosion, altitude and thermal shock, as well as battery cyclers.

An investment drive in vehicle electrification testing

This is all part of a much wider investment plan, which was kick-started by an extensive new EMC chamber for full-vehicle testing of trucks, heavy duties, and all kinds of EVs.

Another notable addition has been a mobile dyno for testing EMC on EV motors with mechanical load. This test bench was designed and manufactured by the Applus+ Laboratories Engineering department and allows 360-degree testing.

The new chamber at our UK laboratory, Applus+ 3C Test, features a reinforced floor and EV-charging capabilities, and it is ready to test the latest buses, heavy duties and off-road vehicles.

We have continued the investment drive at our UK test center to expand our capabilities for full vehicle EMC testing. The new full-vehicle chamber builds on our capabilities from the existing one, which now will be dedicated to commercial vehicles. Both chambers are equipped to test Electric Vehicles (EVs) in charging mode.

Buses, heavy duties and off-road vehicles

Large heavy vehicles require very specific facilities to be tested indoors, where measures are more accurate than outdoor testing. Chamber dimensions, maximum weight and door size are limiting elements for many laboratories. The new chamber at Applus+ 3C Test is a state-of-the-art facility where OEMs can test their newest developments. With a strong floor withstanding up to 50 tonnes of weight as well as a 5 x 5-metre door, we can now test virtually any road vehicle on the market.

Advancing technology for greener transportation

Applus+ Laboratories is committed to supporting the automotive industry in its innovation push to develop more environmental-friendly vehicles. The chamber is equipped with all the necessary auxiliary equipment to test new energy vehicles – BEV and PHEV – in charging mode.

This new investment adds to our full vehicle EMC facilities in the UK and Spain, reinforcing our position as a European leader in EMC testing for the whole automotive industry, from sports cars to off-road vehicles.

Applus+ Laboratories appointed as a UK Approved Body for Ex products

Our UK-based subsidiary, Applus+ 3C Test, has been appointed as an Approved Body for UKCA marking of equipment and protective systems intended for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (UKEX). Working in a seamless manner with our certification bodies in the EU and North America (QPS Evaluation Services), Applus+ 3C Test will be able to provide a global market access for all types of EX products.

UKCA marking mandatory from the start of 2023 

After a year-long extension period, UKCA marking will replace CE marking, effective January 1, 2023. It will be a mandatory requirement for most products, including those intended for use in potentially explosives atmospheres, known as Ex or ATEX in Europe and Hazardous Location (Haz Loc) in North America.

Applus+ Laboratories appointed to provide conformity assessment of Ex products for the global market 

Applus+ Laboratories is uniquely positioned to certify Ex products for sale in the EU, the UK, North America, and elsewhere in the world.

  • For the EU market: our subsidiaries (QPS Europe in the Netherlands, and QPS Evaluation Services in Toronto, Canada) are accredited as an ATEX Notified Body. As such they can issue Type Certificates and QAN documents in accordance with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
  • For the UK market: Applus+ 3C Test in the UK can issue Type Certificates and QAN to meet UKEX regulations.
  • For North America: QPS Evaluation Services in Toronto can test and certify Ex products to the applicable Canadian and US national Haz Loc standards. Certified products will bear the accredited QPS Certification Mark, which is recognized in both countries.
  • For the global market: QPS Evaluation Services in Toronto is accredited in the international IECEx Scheme as a Certification Body (ExCB) and a test lab (ExTL). As such, QPS can test Ex products to the applicable IEC standard and issue IECEx Test Reports and Certificates which are recognized in over 50 countries around the world.

Applus+ Laboratories appointed as a UKCA Conformity Assessment Body for EMC and Radio

Applus+ Laboratories will be able to offer market access services for both the EU+EFTA Market (CE marking) and the UK (UKCA marking).

The new UKCA mark and the transitional period
Following the Brexit agreement between the UK and the EU–and after the transitioning period ends on 1st of January 2023–the UK will no longer be aligned with EU regulations for EMC and Radio products conformity and market access rules (CE marking).

Instead, the UK launched its own conformity assessment scheme for market access in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), known as UKCA marking. However, UKCA marking alone cannot be used for products placed on the Northern Ireland market. See the guidance on placing goods on the Northern Ireland market.

Applus+ Laboratories accredited to provide conformity assessment for both UK and EU markets
To ensure our clients enjoy an uninterrupted market access service, our UK subsidiary 3C Test Limited has obtained the status of UK Market Conformity Assessment Body (UKMCAB) in the fields of EMC and Radio.
From now on, we will be able to provide a one-stop-shop service for manufacturers that sell their products in both markets, through our certification bodies in UK and Europe.

Global Market Access services for radio equipment
Applus+ Laboratories is certification body for wireless products in key markets such as the EU+EFTA (NB 0370), the UK (UKMCAB 8508), the US (TCB ES0002), and Canada (FCB CAB Identifier ES0001).
